Olivia, my granddaughter is two and six months. She has been studying art since weeks old. Some of the first objects she noticed, knew where they were and looked for them upon return were the paintings on our walls. From there we went to art books with big pictures and art magazines like Art News which is our favorite. She has been intensely interested and drawn to all things artistic which has been valuable in her development along with an ever-questioning mind. At about a year old we started experimenting with graphite pencil and watercolor paper using the high chair tray as her drawing table. She was serious and intent from the beginning. As you can see by the photograph she has moved upstairs into my studio were I serve as assistant and observer only. She selects brush, color and all artistic decision. I am not allowed to make a mark on her work just as I don't allow that with mine. If I tried she would simple walk away and not touch the piece again I found by mistake. I understand and feel the same way it is a matter of respect. I have learned and rediscovered an unbelievable amount of knowledge when it comes to approaching a work and about color interaction. Seems to be a basic instinct with her showing a maturity far beyond her years. Perhaps she will continue to paint for a lifetime or just stop one day and never go back. Either way I'm certain these times are helping to awaken her mind eyes and hands enhancing her life now and forever.
